Marine Mammal Coalition was established in 1989 as a nonprofit trade organization representing the interest of public display facilities involved in education, conservation, research, and display of marine mammals. Zoos and aquariums play an important role in educating the public and providing opportunities to students to learn about nature and the need to protect marine mammals and their habitats. The Marine Mammal Protection Act, Endangered Species Act and Animal Welfare Act recognize the valuable services of zoos and aquariums which foster and promote the goals and objectives of these legislations. Tens of millions of people visit marine mammal facilities every year throughout the United States which helps create appreciation and stewardship for marine mammals and their environment.
